We're Home!

Tuesday night I brought Marisa home after being discharged from the hospital!  In her last day there her calcium level held steady, and even slightly increased for 24 hours straight.  The kids are happy to have Marisa back home.  


It is amazing to have pictures of Marisa sitting up and out of bed, eating, and smiling.  They are a stark contrast to the pain and immobilization she was experiencing just a few days ago.  Just before we departed the hospital yesterday, one of the doctors who was assisting with her surgery came by to check on Marisa.  He sat at the end of her bed and as he shared details about her surgery, reminder Marisa a couple of times how worried they were for her just after the operation: labored breathing, paralyzed vocal cords, and difficulty waking up from anesthesia.  We were told on multiple occasions that this could have easily gone in a different, more perilous, direction.  We now feel particularly close to this verse from Psalms.

When they call to me, I will answer;
I will be with them in trouble.
I will rescue and honor them.
~ Ps 91.15

What's next...
Marisa will be working with an occupational and speech therapist.  She has begun daily exercises that will help her regain her voice, and increase range of motion in body parts that were affected by strained nerves.  She has a new level of appreciation for the coordination of breathing, eating, swallowing, and drinking.  She will also need to just rest and heal.  

In about 10 days, Marisa will again meet with the surgeon to check up on her healing and map out the rest of treatment.  Sometime this summer, Marisa will receive radio-active iodine treatment that will help identify and attack any remaining cancer cells lingering around in her body.  Once we know if any other cancer exists in her body we will map out the next stage of treatment and recovery.

There is more to say.  We will update again soon.  For now we are celebrating Marisa's return home.

Dear friends and family, In the last few days Marisa has had several pre-op appointments which have been informative.   After a closer look at the CT scan, one doctor shared that there is a good chance the surgeon may need to remove one of Marisa's jugular veins since one of the masses appears to be attached to it.  We do not have enough information yet to know how this may affect Marisa's recovery.  Next week, Marisa is scheduled for an MRI to rule out a link between her chronic migraines and the cancer in her neck.  Also next week, w e should receive results from blood work that will determine if Marisa will be put on a blood thinner for a month after surgery due to a pre-existing clotting disorder.  Good news... Medical Mystery

Dear friends and family, After a two week lull between appointments, Marisa and I were back at Johns Hopkins on Tuesday for another post-surgical examination.  The good news is that Marisa's calcium level has consistently remained at a normal level!  Her parathyroid glands are beginning to function well on their own.  (These are the glands that produce calcium, and they are often damaged in this type of surgery.)  We are grateful for this improvement as low calcium was one of the problems that kept Marisa in the hospital longer than expected. In the last few days we have been hearing a flicker of phonation, just above her whisper, on a more consistent basis.  At first, this was encouraging to us.  However, the medical team does not know yet if this indicates good or bad news.  Throughout the appointment the surgeon and speech therapist reminded us several times that Marisa's double vocal cord paralysis is a "medical mystery."  In fact, the ...
